Filotto

Filotto has two halves. The drill is cloze and reverse cloze over a large sentence corpus, scheduled so you meet words near the edge of what you can already do. The reader is a chapter written fresh each night and delivered by email as a link to your own page, where tapping a word gives you the gloss and, at the same time, tells the system you did not have it.

The interesting part is the gate between them. Before a chapter is sent, it is measured against your known-word list, and only words you have actually proved count toward coverage. The statistical estimate of your vocabulary, useful as it is for placing you, does not get spent as free vocabulary in prose. A chapter that scores below the floor does not go out; it gets rewritten until it does.

That is a strict rule and it costs real effort on the writing side. It is also the promise: we check every chapter against what you know before we send it, so the thing in your inbox tonight is readable tonight rather than aspirational.
